Free day

We have the day off. So we go exploring.

On our walk through Jacksonville's San Marco neighborhood, we happen upon Peterbrooke Chocolatier.

They have a giant production room...

... and in their shop, lots of free samples. I liked the chocolate-covered rice krispie treats. And the chocolate-covered pretzles. And the chocolate-covered oreos. And the chocolate-covered toffee.

We do some damage and waddle off on our merry way.

Next snack: lunch at Southern Grill, a homey diner across the street from the farmer's market. And that's farmer-apostrophe-s, because it's just one farmer with one stand. He recommends Southern Grill and says the mayor eats there. That's good enough for us.

PJ gets the black beans & rice with sausage and cornbread. Good southern eats.

I get falafel. Not so southern, but it's served with lots of lemony hummus.

And now, onto dinner -

But first, we pick up Britt from the airport! And then we go to Mossfire Grill, a southwestern-y place that gets good reviews on Chowhound & the local papers. (Loyal readers will know that, since the Stone's debacle in Iowa, I no longer depend on either Gourmet or Roadfood for reviews - Jean & Michael Stern can both bite me.)

Britt & Pam both get burritos.

Wisa gets meatloaf with cheddar-chipotle mash, which is very cheddary, indeed. And it's all covered with a slightly boozy mushroom gravy.

I get the chicken empanadas, which actually was more like a chimichanga. No harm, however. Any sort of deep-fried carb is fine with me.

Dessert: PJ gets the key lime pie. It's kind of chiffony. Could'a been more tart.

PJ's trying to sample as many key lime pies as she can. We have yet to find one she really likes...
