Three more days 'til we hit the road

Maybe things have changed since the Cross-Country Move of '93 (CT to SF), but I remember midwestern salad bars only had veggies that were either pickled beyond recognition or were covered in mayo or jello. The only things that were "green" were iceburg lettuce & lime ambrosia.

As I search the web for clues on Iowa eats, I am both assured and horrified: Iowa City seems to be promising, with plenty of decent restaurants (not to mention indy bookstores, which pretty much guarantee good coffee within spitting distance). There also seems to be a big Slow Food movement in Iowa, but I don't think the other tour folks are going to be too hip on following the slow food, and we don't have much time for food hunting, anyway.

On the other hand, the rest of Iowa seems to leave much to be desired. Sandwiches filled with fried pork tenderloin (pounded paper-thin & fried) and loose meat (which reminds one of bowel movements, not lunch food) dominate the menus. Looks like it's going to be an oink-a-palooza.

I don't want to be a glass is half-empty sort of gal, but just in case we get tired of loose meat, some of us have packed emergency rations.
